The GT-R's runaway racing success not only earned it the now famous 'Godzilla' nickname, originating in the Australia media as a nod to the fictional Japanese movie monster that destroyed everything in its path, but also forced the Australian Touring Car Championship to ditch the global Group A regulations. The car also preserves the nickname of its predecessor, Godzilla, a moniker originally given by the Australian motoring publication Wheels in 1989 for its R32 generation model.
